Our Talking Blue Jays Photo shows two jays talking. We cannot tell gender. The female Blue Jay is normally slightly smaller. If you spend much time with Blue Jays you will soon be able to identify each bird. No two jays are the same. Colors of feathers are different between two birds...but the final result looks so similar that most people think all jays look the same. Check out the white feathers between two jays. We recommend you spend time to name your local birds as you learn who is who. It's fun! Large photo measures 16 x 20". Blue Jays are intellignt and maintain tight family bonds. Their fondness for acorns helped spread oak trees after the last glacial period. Read The Master Photographer's Exclusive

As an artist, I have painted many species of birds. One thing I have discovered over the years - Blue Jay paintings don't sell. Guess they don't have the cute factor that Cardinals and Chickadees have. Since I don't need to paint anymore jays, I thought I would challenge myself to photograph them today, and see what kind of an image I could come up with. A blasting jeer comes from a blue jay in the big oak. Smaller birds scatter, except for a downy woodpecker, who freezes motionless on a tree trunk. A sharp-shinned hawk glides silently into my yard. It settles on a branch, watching for some small bird it can seize. It might have caught one, except that the blue jay ratted it out. The blue jay may only have meant to warn other jays, but all the other birds understood perfectly. The feeders are suddenly bare, and the downy woodpecker that did not fly holds so still that it’s almost invisible. I

The Blue Jay, a member of the Corvidae family along with other jays, plus crows and magpies, is one of the the prettiest of the jays. These raucous birds tend to be aggressive around feeders, but I guess we can forgive them because of their good looks ! This photo captures the Blue Jay's portrait, and the ripening apples that surround the jay verify the Fall season. Does a Blue Jay portrait grace a wall in your home or office ?
